DOWNWARD CARIBOU’S existence is a miracle born of Esau Kripanik's perseverence.
Esau drove his Skidoo for two days across the Arctic in order to cut Brilliant White Stone from the quarry outside of Igloolik.
This is the stone he needs to carve his magnificent SIGNATURE carving
It is a sad fact that many Inuit carvers lose their lives while transporting stone.
His dangerous journey is fraught with blizzards, white outs, roaming polar bears and broken ice.
Esau is one of my favourite carvers.
He is talented and innovative.
He has Magic in his fingertips.
Carving a Caribou has its difficulties.
The Caribou's legs taper into the foot.
The "ankles" are thin and fragile and often break either during carving or when the stone is being polished.
It's heartbreaking!
Each powerful muscle ripples as Downward, with head down, scents his way home.
His regal antlers are regal.
Esau's SIGNATURE is the exquisite embroidery (etchings) of Arctic mammals and birds on his sculptures.
The matte finish of the white stone lends itself to these carved motifs.
Downward has several motifs including a majestic Wolf, and a cavorting Seal.
This beauty will shine in your collection.
