A Tupilak is a mythical avenging monster from Inuit religion and folklore.
In the past, they were carved from bits of animal parts and occasionally from human corpses (hair).
Using chants and magic, the Tupilaks were brought to life to be placed in the sea to hunt down the offending target.
In modern times,Tupilaks are no longer sent as curses.
Instead, they have become highly collectible pieces of art.
The style is associated with the Inuit from Greenland.
PEARLY WHITES is a traditional Tupilak.
The carving is a fantasy figure fashioned in a grotesque style.
The detailed carving is impeccable.
The large teeth, the protuberant tummy, wide surprised eyes and flared nostrils.
Do you have a Tupilak in your collection?
